Why the Regular Assessment of Health Technology Important?

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is a special type of research field for systematic assessment of Medical Sciences. It is performed in order to assess the medical procedures and equipments to know whether they are still effective, appropriate and working well or require any type of update. Technology has made the healthcare system more accurate and fast to deal with any type of disease and predict the outcome of procedures being implemented to solve the problem.

HTA broadly focuses on two aspects:

  1. Clinical Effectiveness: The new processes and procedures being developed are better alternatives of the existing and can cure a more efficiently and effectively. Additionally, it should be feasible to be converted from model into reality.

  2. Cost Effectiveness: The new development outcomes are better and cost effective alternative to the existing technology implementation.

HTA has been grown out of the tension between new and often costly health technologies and limited healthcare budgets. It is also called as a bridge between evidence and policy-making as it seeks to provide a range of stakeholders especially those involved in funding, planning, purchasing and investing in healthcare system with accessible, usable and evident information that will guide decisions about technology and the efficient allocation of resources.

  1. Health technologies include drugs, medical devices and clinical/surgical procedures. HTA is a multidisciplinary activity that systematically examines the technical performance, safety, clinical efficacy and effectiveness, cost, cost-effectiveness, organizational implications, social consequences, legal and ethical considerations of the application of a health technology’.

  2. HTA has to take into consideration all aspects that might be influenced by the technology as well as those influencing the technology.

Healthcare is the system which always requires being the most efficient for the healthy development of a healthy nation. A lot of expenses are spent on healthcare every year for education, research work, and equipment maintenance and vulnerability analysis of diseases. As medical technology needs to work always accurately, its maintenance is incurring charges after fewer uses. Moreover, continue research work suggests solutions to new problems and the existing systems are upgraded to provide additional functionality. Every time it is difficult to make a new machine and it would be costly too, so technology assessment is done to make a check over the alternative technologies if are better and cost-effective than the existing ones and are then implemented to the working machines.
